It makes Strange Academy feel connected to the world, rather than off to the side like it very easily could be shoved. I also love how much Skottie Young ties this into previous Doctor Strange runs (with a villain reveal that had me cackling with glee) as well as the wider Marvel universe as well (like Galactus' helmet on the Rainbow Bridge, a revelation regarding Weirdworld, or the status quo of one particular Asgardian villain). The student relationships continue to flourish and change, and not just in terms of romantic stuff either - the bond between these characters is really something to see, especially in the final two issues which really put them all through the wringer. With the groundwork well and truly laid in volume 1, volume 2 can kick things into high gear. It's second semester at Strange Academy, which means field trips to space with Rocket and Groot, and off to Asgard with the mighty Volstagg! But secrets abound, and more than one student has something to hide - even if they don't know it! Plus, the final fate of Doyle Dormammu, and the students' biggest challenge yet - Parents Day! But there isn't enough substance to sustain the audience. This whole series just appeals to people who like magical academies. Then when they do appear, the reader is treated with some abominable changes like the Scarlet Witch wearing a horrific outfit that combines her costume with a matronly blouse. They are mentioned moderately, but appear sparingly. The superhero professors rarely appear in more than a handful of panels.

If you got into this series because you're a fan of conventional magic superheroes who teach at this school as professors, you're in for a disappointment. The enormous cast prevents the reader from learning more than two or three facts for each student. Humberto Ramos' artwork offends me to my core, what with his bizarre, melty way of drawing even regular humans. Through this volume, I would still rate this series no more than 2 stars. I have noticed an uptick in the quality of the most recent issues of Strange Academy, but those issues came right after this volume.
